- Background and history:

Historically, the term "Hard to Reach" and "Resistant Client" has had different meanings for different agencies. According to research by Dr.Nicola Brackertz, Research Fellow, Asia Pacific Centre for Social Investment & Philanthropy: "The problem with using the term ‘hard to reach’ is that implies a homogeneity within distinct groups, which does not necessarily exist. Thereby ‘it defines the problem as one within the group itself, not within your approach to them" (Smith 2006).

This course is about revisiting and revamping our thinking and our approach when we wish to reach "Hard to Reach and Resistant groups" in order that they are able to achieve better outcomes for themselves and their families.

Many groups actively avoid statutory and related services either because they feel we have nothing to offer or they feel what we have to offer brings them "above the radar" and therefore often results in an active choice to avoid us no matter how in need of that service they might be.

Ethos of the Approaches used in the Training:
The training provides approaches that engage and provide continuum. Traditionally, working with in a supportive or therapeutic capacity has focused on identifying the problems presented by individual pathologies and deficiencies. Forward looking approaches including Solution Focused Brief Therapy (deShazer '85) Examine, Repair & Move On (Murphy '93) and Optima Communication Skills (Murphy '06) shifts the focus towards the subtle examining of any existing successes; the future rather than the past and all work is tailored to how the clients live, their unique socio-economic and ethnic culture rather than engaging them "into the pattern of the service". Evaluations show these approaches are successful in engaging "Hard to Reach and Resistant Families".

The three models that make up the framework of this course are not just tools for "therapeutic intervention" but are practical, empowering, strengths based approaches that can be harnessed by workers across all fields for "conversations" that help adults, young people and families achieve better outcomes.
