The Young Mentors during training
This is a specialist programme for implementation with a designated group of young people recruited as Young Mentors over the School summer break to work with younger children who may be at risk of anti-social behaviour.

Our Positive Activies Scheme was first implemented in June 2002: the Consultancy was commissioned by Liverpool City Council to train young people aged between 16-18 as Young Mentors, who were then engaged to work with children on the Summer SPLASH Programme, funded by the Childrens Fund, running over the six week summer holiday.
The remit of the Young Mentors was to help children in their play, to help them explore their skills and strengths and to highlight the importance of supporting others during the SPLASH programme.
Following the intensive 3 day training course by the Consultancy in our Solution Focused Young Mentoring Programme, the Young Mentors worked with the children and were supported by Liverpool City Council staff.
The aims of the Programme are that both the children and the Young Mentors gain an insight to their strengths as individuals and have a renewed recognition of the importance of responsibility towards themselves and others. The Young Mentors received weekly evening support facilitated by the Consultancy.
The programme is flexible and can be utilized according to the needs of the commissioning agency.

The second local authority to implement this programme was Walsall Borough Council. To partner the work that the Young Mentors implemented with the children, Walsall Borough Council also commissioned the Consultancy to run their Parenting the Teenager and Parenting the 21st Century Child Programmes with the parents of some of the children attending the SPLASH programme.
The activities were attended by children from across the Borough, some of whom were referred directly from Social Services. Council staff who also attended the training, provided constant support as "Troubleshooters" for the Mentors with the Consultancy team providing weekly on-site Group Supervision for the Mentors in their hands-on work.
